ESU Committee on Commodification of Education (or in short, CoCo) is a content committee, which’s aim is to gather and spread information regarding commodification of education as well as to facilitate ESU’s activities and formulation of policies in this field in regard to higher education.

CoCo was established in ESU’s 41st Board Meeting in May 2001 as a committee of 5 people, democratically elected by the board of ESU.

Fields of responsibility of CoCo lies in monitoring development of processes, associated with transnational education (TNE), General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) in regard to higher education, financing of higher education and all kind of expressions of trade in higher education. Special attention in the last years (since adoption of ESU policy paper on Lisbon strategy in 2004) is paid to the process of transforming Europe to the largest “knowledge-based economy” – Lisbon process, as well as to Lisbon process interaction with Bologna process and to future of European higher education.

CoCo’s intention is to incorporate the concept of education as a means for social development, democratic empowerment and advancing of the general well-being and economic development of societies in public policies, with a special attention paid to accessible education as a prerequisite for culturally and democratically inclusive society.
