KAUNAS – Preparations for the 26th European Students’ Convention (ESC26) are now underway in Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania. This time the ESC will be co-hosted by the Lithuanian member of the European Students’ Union (ESU), the Lithuanian National Union of Students (LSS). The conference will take place at Vytautas Magnus University and Kaunas University of Technology and will be held from 20 to 22 September 2013.
Internationalisation of higher education
Being included in the official agenda of the Lithuanian Presidency of the European Union Council, the conference guests and speakers will address a very important topic in the higher education field, namely the internationalisation of the European Higher Education Area and its impact on the external policy of the European Union. This applies in particular to the so-called Eastern Partnership of the European Union, referring to its external relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. ESU represents students in all of these countries through its member unions, except for Moldova. However, ESU takes part in the QUAEM project aiming at supporting and developing a quality assurance system in Moldova with active students' participation.
Among the sessions that will be organised during ESC26 in Kaunas are discussions on the current trends in the internationalisation of higher education, students' access to mobility, recognition of prior learning and open educational resources. Additionally, a session on the European elections in 2014 and student activism in the Eastern Partnership countries will be facilitated.
About the European Students' Convention
The European Students' Convention is a biannual event organised by ESU in collaboration with the national unions of students in the country where the conference is held. Previous conventions have showed that they are an important contribution to higher education policies in Europe and the one in Kaunas will bring students' perspectives directly into the policy-making processes on the internationalisation of higher education systems.
The draft agenda and more information about the event can be found on LSS's website and the Facebook page for the event.
