EÜL – Eesti Üliõpilaskondade Liit – was founded in 1991 by nine student unions, shortly after Estonia regained its independence. EÜL’s members are democratic student unions from higher education institutions (currently 22 full-members and 2 candidate-members in August 2013). EÜL is recognised by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research as the umbrella organisation of student unions.
EÜL has been the official distributer of International Student Identity Card ISIC in Estonia since 1993. EÜL also finances and publishes the national student newspaper Eesti Üliõpilasleht and organises the Tallinn Student Days.
