This project, is taking place in collaboration with Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT), an entity within the University of Malta, which aims to strengthen investment in high-calibre research and development across every faculty and department. KSU believes that research is the core of any reputable university, and for the past five centuries, the institution has been striving to become an important centre for world-class research projects, across a wide range of disciplines. The University of Malta carries the responsibility to conduct research, especially in study areas of an indigenous or national dimension. Important steps have already been taken, including strong investments in research facilities and investment in human resources, whilst encouraging students to continue furthering their studies.
Basic research is aimed to advance basic scientific ideas rather than develop specific products, which allow further thinking about the potential applications. This is a type of research which the economists refer to as “public good”, as besides helping the ranking of the University; it also helps in the progress of the general industry leaving an economical effect in the society.
However all this comes at a cost, especially if high calibre research activity is desired. KSU believes that asking the student community to contribute for research entails a major culture change- a necessary one. However, KSU also notes that the will to engage in the growth of research development exists and thanks to a number of contributors; from NGOs to students –large and small- the research activities on campus have developed at a steady pace. This should make the student community feel a sense of pride of their alma mater.
Through this initiative students can donate a minimum of €1 per month. This scheme should in no way substitute but to compliment the funds given by the governments. This is one of the many initiatives that are being launched by the KSU Education Office this year, in collaboration with RIDT, with the aim to increase the awareness of ongoing research amongst students. No amount is too great or too small, every little bit counts. KSU believes that any possible contributions towards research activities are a solid investment for the innovative and economic development of our society.
