The National Union of Students in UK (NUSUK) is undertaking an ambitious piece of work this year to identify the barriers faced by working class people when it comes to accessing and succeeding in post-16 education in the UK.
The impacts of austerity, constant policy change in further education and the continued marketization of higher education have created a critical mass of poor decisions made by government, locking many out of education and training.
Between now and February, NUSUK will deliver a program of work which will produce a report and recommendations addressing deprivation relating to education, skills and training in post-16 education. Following on from that NUSUK will work with their member students’ unions and partners in the charity and social justice sector to lobby government to implement their recommendations.
NUSUK brought together a group of Commissioners with expertise in education, employment, poverty and social justice. They will hear a range of evidence from organisations and academics on the topics above and are inviting UK students’ unions to get involved by sharing the stories and experiences of their students and submitting their own evidence to the Commission.
As part of the Commission we would welcome evidence from our colleagues in national student unions (NUS’) across Europe explaining how education systems are funded, how the national government supports working class students to access and succeed in education and what impact that has in your country. NUSUK will be taking evidence until 12th December 2017.
