BM70: European Students urge the Spanish Government to establish a grant system based on equality
The European Students have reported several times before on the attacks of the Spanish Government to the equality of its Higher Education System and to the access to education. The most significant attack has been the increase in tuition fees and the cuts of the Spanish Student Grant System, removing access to financial support as a right.
The Spanish Government has imposed this reformed, inequitable system without any dialogue or negotiation. This was done against the position of the key stakeholders such as the National Union of Students (CREUP) and the Spanish Rectors Conference (CRUE), among others.
Therefore, we, the European Students, demand the Spanish Government establishes a Grant System based on the values of equality, plurality and social justice. This grant system should guarantee access to Higher Education to every citizen regardless of their socioeconomic background. Moreover, we demand an open and participative process involving all relevant stakeholders, including CREUP, to develop this new Student Grant System.
Considering the upcoming elections in Spain of the 26th of June, we also want to call upon all of the candidates running for office to take responsibility over educational issues, especially on those relating to social justice, equal opportunities and inclusion. European Students stand behind the Spanish folks, encouraging them to make a clear commitment to the students by signing the manifesto of CREUP’s campaign “Vote for Education”.
